The WEIRD STUFF ➡️ Go Fishing Instead

FISHING???  🐠 🎣

How boring!  Who wants to learn how to fish?  NOT ME, that's for sure.  LOL. 😝

Ok, maybe some of you would want to learn...  😎

As you know, we wanted to forward some info on current events and topics of high interest - but found very quickly that is not well received by certain "entities" shall we say.  😒  LOL  We did warn you the subject matter was sensitive...

NP (no problem) - Since we cannot do that, we will be doing something else.  😘 And we authentically believe this will be much more useful to you, will serve you much better in the long run...

Last week we mentioned there's a quote by philosopher Confucius that says (extremely paraphrased), "Give someone a fish, they eat for a day. Teach them how to fish, and they will eat the rest of their lives."  Definitely paraphrased, but you get the idea.  👍🏼

Instead of giving you the news/fish directly (event by event), we're going to provide tips and tricks - to teach how *you* can discover the news (learn how to fish) yourself - forever!  ☀️

Ready?

We are jumping into manipulation tactics!
How are we all being manipulated to believe things that are false?  🤷🏻‍♀️

Cool beans!!  Yay!  Don’t you want to know? 🤛🏼

Instead of spoon-feeding you the material itself, we are going to help you discern if/when you are being manipulated.  So when you are viewing, reading, listening to content, you may be able to detect if that source is messing with you, trying to get you to believe something that likely-possibly-probably is NOT true.

There are so many different techniques to trick the audience, and you may already recognize a few. 🤔

Please raise your hand if you like being tricked and manipulated!  ☹️

A quick background note:  These are sometimes called "logical fallacies" because they are illustrating bad logic that does not make sense.

The content creator relies on the fact that you will not recognize this.  In other words, they kind of treat you like a dummy 😲, and hope you will not catch this.  And if you are not aware, you will fall for it, and they will fool you by that device, that manipulation technique.

There are lists of many logical fallacies; we're going to discuss newer tactics which we're seeing right now - which may or may not be on those older lists.  OK?

The first manipulation tactic we’ll describe is...

❇️ ”LATEST AND GREATEST" ❇️

How many times have you heard this?  A lot.  It can be a pretty benign, fun, catchy - NP in a casual conversation.

Like, "What's the latest and greatest in romcoms?"  Or "The latest and greatest in tea drinks is matcha!" ☕️

However, "Latest and Greatest" can become an issue when we start to associate it with more complex, advanced developments like technology or medicine, etc. 🔌

LATEST needs to be separated from GREATEST.

Seriously.

LATEST does not always mean GREATEST.  It can or cannot, but it’s not always the case.

We all have this tendency to think the most recent, newest stuff is the best.  This is way, way deeply ingrained in us.  🤔

Well, it's not necessarily true - logically, and it may not be true practically.

The LATEST part is usually fine.  If the new development is the most recent, then that's absolutely true.  It's the latest.  That's fine.  NP.

The problem arises when we associate it also as the GREATEST.  Especially if it's new, we don't know yet if it's the greatest.

 > Have they worked out all the bugs? 🐞

 > Maybe it's faster than before, or bigger than before, but is it as safe or safer?  Or is it less safe?

 > Have they tested it sufficiently 🎛️?

 > How long is the intended lifespan?  Will you have to replace it sooner ⏱️ with another one that costs an arm and a leg?

 > They will usually say it's tested or safe, but is that actually true?  They are trying to make a sale here.

 > Do they know if there are any side effects?

 > Are there other new features (good or bad) stuffed in - that are not clearly described?

 > What about long term cost?  Will it cost A LOT more to fix if it breaks?  If it's new technology does anyone even know how to repair it?

 > How long before the next upgrade or next model?  ⌛️

That's the catch.  If we lump the GREATEST factor with the LATEST factor, we could be making a mistake.

And let's be honest, if it's new, *someone* will probably be trying to sell it  💵 to make a profit.  They will market it to be the best thing since sliced bread because they want you to buy that new thing - and they will benefit.

Will they go overboard trying to caution you to be careful?  Not necessarily.  Kind of doubt it.  That’s why someone created fine print.  🙃

In general they are trying to sell new products, not prevent sales.  💰 Right?

Just sayin'.

So what happens if you wait just a little bit?  You save $ and you get to see for sure if it's what you want or need.  You get to check if it's safe based on other people's experience.  You get to see if the new model is good or has some glitches.

What some of us like to say is, "Hey, that's a great idea.  You go first."  LOL!!!  😄😂

And if we dig just a liiiiiiiiiiittle bit deeper… this is what's really interesting...

LATEST and GREATEST tactic is often tied to FOMO.  Right?  We all know about FOMO.  🤭

That's our next manipulation tactic:  FOMO

Woohoo.

Catch us there!
