Manipulation Tactics - FOMO

Last time we described how “Latest” may not always be “Greatest.”

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Sometimes a big NO.  ⛔️

Sometimes, oftentimes ( ⬅️ cool word), if someone is trying to sell something, they might emphasize the good points of the product and minimize the bad points.  That might be understandable - as long as no one is harmed.

That is where we draw the line - when someone could likely be harmed.

Perhaps this is why someone invented the fine print, so the bad points are legally stated, but there’s a strong chance you might not see it.  😱 Tricky.  Lol.

⛔️ FOMO ⛔️

Now we will discuss why we could be motivated with this “Latest and Greatest” technique - through FOMO.

“What is FOMO?”
ARE YOU KIDDING?
YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT “FOMO” IS?
WHERE HAVE *YOU* BEEN LIVING -
UNDER A ROCK???

That above 👆🏼 is our using FOMO on you.  🤭

It stands for “Fear of missing out.”  We tried to induce shame upon you for being a dolt and missing something that the rest of the world apparently knows.

… basically making you feel very dumb and very small.

… basically implying that you are way behind the times and not keeping up with normal people

…basically making you feel like you got left behind and are suffering alone in this horrible state

Please raise your hand if you think that would be fun.

To avoid that, you try to keep up and consequently have this fear of missing out (FOMO).

If you are an independent thinker, you probably couldn’t care less about FOMO and don’t care what people think about you.  Which is fine - you get to decide about your life.

But in today’s culture, there’s a lot more pressure to keep up with technology, social media, other trends… and there’s a lot more shame inflicted on people who don’t.

Unfortunately.

We prefer that each human being makes their own choices as they decide whatever suits them best.  They may have unique preferences, priorities, budget considerations, etc.  Only that person really knows their own circumstances.

But it ain’t that way right now.

We understand this pressure, and we are calling it out, and we’re considering it BOGUS. 🗑️

We human beings are social creatures, and we need human interaction, so no one wants to be ostracized.  We all want to be accepted - and this fear is understandable- that we don’t want to be viewed as a loser who didn’t get the memo.  🥴 The guy who gets pushed to the outer edges of the social circle, etc.

So we try to stay reasonably informed of what everyone else is doing and stay current.

Ok.  But reality is that we all have a limited amount of time: 24 hours.  We all have responsibilities and obligations.  We are all busy.  Sometimes we have crises piled on top of our normal load.  Then we have more stress and may not have time to keep up with whatever.

Time is a key factor.

Then there is the personal factor where you may not have the interest or funds, etc.

It’s your life, and YOU GET TO DECIDE what is important to you.

And this is the tough part, sometimes we may consider taking a short break to let go of some of those social pressures - time away from friends, social groups, virtual groups.

We get it - FOMO.  We all have FOMO to some extent, some more than others.  No one wants to be left out.  😕

But can you see how FOMO might make you  stay on the the Latest and Greatest hamster wheel?

Like… wow, the new [whatever] is coming out in two months.  I have to get it!  If I have the old [whatever] I’ll look like such a loser.  I don’t want to be that loser.  I better get that [whatever].

Example?  Cell phones.  🤳🏼 $800 later…

Can you see how FOMO and Latest-and-Greatest together could cost you a lot of $?

If everyone has FOMO and Latest-and-Greatest… and everyone is running out there to buy that new [whatever], that’s a ton of products sold.  That could be a lot of profit for some companies.

There’s nothing wrong with buying!  There’s nothing wrong with profit!  We are huge fans of shopping and the free market!

But we hope you buy for your own reasons and not for someone else’s.  You worked hard for that 💵💰.  Right? 😁

That’s where we are at EHSWO - identifying  more options.  In this case it’s the option to recognize a possible manipulation and the option to bypass it.

The option to say, “Thanks - maybe later.”
